"The Eagle has landed"

40 years ago Apollo 11 landed on the moon and my dad was there... sort of.

This appeared in today's Deseret News. Click on the "The Eagle has landed" title to read the entire article.

...Armstrong's voice was calm. But his heart wasn't, racing twice the usual rate at 156 beats per minute.
The cool atmosphere of the previous three days of the mission was now thick with tension.
"We could tell something wasn't right, but we didn't know what or how worried the center flight personnel were for a while after," former Deseret News science reporter Hal Knight said last week, recalling the events that day as one in a throng of news people from around the world gathered in the auditorium of mission control in Houston.
Aborting the mission had become a real possibility, but at the same time an impossibility — only 30 seconds of fuel remained.
"It was the moment I remember best and was one of many that made the lunar landing one of the rare times when real life is more dramatic than any novel or movie could ever make it," Knight said of his two-week assignment to cover the launch.
Knight had an insider's feel of the mission-control center, courtesy of a personal, other-press-prohibited guided tour a few days earlier by his old Jordan High School classmate Don Lind, an Apollo astronaut who wouldn't get to go to the moon but would fly with the Shuttle Spacelab-3 mission in 1985.
"He got me as close as I could get without being on a rocket," Knight said. "I don't think anyone was even breathing until we finally heard the center intercom say, 'Roger, Tranquility. We copy you on the ground.' "
Knight didn't hear the rest of what Houston said: "You've got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We're breathing again. Thanks a lot."
Applause in the auditorium was too loud. "Even tough old news guys couldn't help but cheer. I remember a reporter from Germany jumped up and raised his arms as if someone had just scored an impossible, last-second shot. It felt like a big, group sigh of relief," Knight said.

The 4th of July

On the 4th of July Connie and I went to take pictures of the fireworks throughout the valley. The best place we found was at the foot of the new Oqurrih Mountain Temple.

The Hearts of the Children to their Fathers

In the upcoming weeks our ward youth conference will be held in Manti to see the Manti pageant. Last week Connie and I took a road trip to visit the area where we will be camping and to scope out some activities. When we came to the city of Nephi we were interested in the ancestral ties we have there. We stopped at the small museum sponsored by the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, they had many interesting displays including photos of my great-great-great grand father Charles Sperry who was part of the group that settled the area. We visited the cemetary and took photos of his head stone and learned much about the settlers of Nephi. We then continued our trip to Manti where we have more ancestral documentation through photos and many glass negatives taken by the brother of Charles Sperry, Miles Sperry. In the late 1800's Miles took a picture of Manti from the top of the Manti Temple.

We were not able to duplicate the location of Miles Sperry's photo but we got as close as possible. The large lot below that has a home on it is where the empty block is in the upper photo.

Note the 2 structures in the yellow circles from the late 1800's

Those 2 structures still stand today and I'm sure many others that we did not see.

Sympathy and Condolences

If you think this is scary...

Look at this...

What is the definition of old? Is it all the decorations in black? Is it having your neices color amazing printed pages of the number "50"? Is it feeling tired at 8:30 and going to bed? How about all the cards that have made Hallmark famous? ... NO... It is getting a senior citizen discount without asking for one and being added to the mailing list of AARP!
yes, yes, yes... Sunday I was added to the ranks of survivors of 50+. Don't feel sorry for me, feel sorry for Connie, she is the one who is married to an "official" old person.
I must thank all those who so generously went out of their way to make May 3rd wonderful.
Thank you.
